-Chicken soup for the teenage soul
-What’s Wrong?
-A newly trained teacher named Mary went to teach at a Navajo Indian reservation. Every day she would ask five students to go to the chalkboard and complete a simple math problem from their homework. They would just stand there silently. She started to think what she was doing wrong. So she asked them what was wrong and she found out something very interesting. The students told her that they knew that not all five of them could do the problem so none of them went up. They believed no one would win if any students were shown up embarrassed at the chalkboard. So they refused to compete with each other in public. So instead she checked each student individually.
-The interesting thing about this is that even at their early age they understood the senselessness of the win-lose approach in the classroom

Title: East Asia
Today I read about the land of rice and fish. The Yangtze River is important to agriculture in China. The plains along the lower Yangtze are known as the land of rice and fish. This is the most fertile region in China. Heavy rains from April through October help to produce plentiful crops. Rice is grown in flooded rice fields called paddies. Heavily flooded paddies can also serve as fishponds for raising fish. Farmers in the Lower Yangtze region produce about 50% of the crops used in China. They also produce more than 70% of the country’s rice.

Thanks Ms. Jade, it's cute. =)

♥ Today I chose to read to about Rome and I learned a few new facts. Latin was the language people spoke in ancient Rome. Today, Rome is the capital of Italy and Italy is a country in southern Europe. Modern Rome is a busy, commercial center, and a popular city with tourists. It is a city known for its beauty and rich culture. Because of its long history, Rome is often called, “The Eternal City.” Rome was the center of a great civilization long ago. People in ancient Rome thought made laws and government decisions very important. Ancient Romans were also great builders, especially, of roads and waterways. Many of their ideas about government and building are still important to people today. The Romans united different lands into an empire. The Roman Empire covered most of Europe, making Rome the most important city in the empire. More than a million people lived there. Today, the Roman Empire no longer exists. Rome is still an important city. It is the largest city in Italy. More than three million people live in Rome and its surrounding suburbs.
♥ It’s hard to pick one interesting fact but I liked looking at the picture of the big stadium and learning about 50,000 men once battling with elephants, lions, and tigers.

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul.
"Finders Keepers"

This story is about a woman who lets her two little daughters walk to school, which is only a short distance away so she knows for sure nothing much can happen. One day the two girls come home with a puppy following them. They loved the puppy so much and the puppy didn't have a collar or any marks to be able to point her out. So they named her Molly and kept her. The mom was looking in the lost and found section on a local paper and saw an Ad about a missing beagle puppy, the one they found. She ignored it and tried to act normal. After a while it kept bugging her so she finally regretfully called. She wished and prayed that the puppy wasn't the lady's that was coming over. When the lady arrived, the lady called LUCY to see if the puppy responded and immediately obeyed. The woman knew for sure that it was the young lady's puppy. After letting her out, she saw a little girl smiling really big, and a wheel chair strapped to the back of the van. The lady explained that the puppy was given to the little girl as a emotional supportist. The little girl was in an accident and left her parylized in the legs. The puppy was the only thing that kept her happy and living. From then on, the woman didn't feel so bad and knew that the puppy was in a better place and that she was blessed for having the life she has.
I learned that you shouldn't be so greedy with things, and appreciate the things you have in life. Not everyone has what you have, even when it doesn't feel like much. Some people have nothing at all.

“Race” by Bart Schneider
A book of short stories

I finished the short story by Naomi Shihab Nye. Naomi lives in the West Banks in Palestine. She talks about how the Palestinians took their house after the Six-Day War in 1967. Before the start of the war, the whole family flew to the U.S. They all left due to his father’s people suffering. She said that on later trips back, her father finally got to see his stolen house. It was now occupied by rabbinical students from Brooklyn. Every time Naomi went back to the West Bank as an adult, she was subject to violence and harassment. I agreed with this story because it refers to fixing racism and prejudice. I liked the part where they would go back just to see their old house. I think she had learned a lot from that experience. In fact, I can tell this story is non-fiction because the War of 1967 really happened.

This morning I read “Accentuating Differences” from the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul III. Its about a girl in school who meets a girl named Julia. They soon find out they have a lot in common and they want to make plans for the weekend. But the girl is ashamed of her mother’s accent and is afraid the girl is going to think different of her. Her mother’s accent doesn't change anything between them and they ended up going to the movies that weekend. They stayed good friends through high school. The girl realized that its her mothers love and compassion people hear not her accent. I liked this story because the girl learned an important lesson, most people care about others and not the way they sound. I thought most interesting fact was that the girls stayed friends until they graduated high school.

The story I read about today was called “ Who You Are Makes A Difference” is was based on love. At a New York high school a teacher presented each of her students with a blue ribbon that read “ Who you are makes a difference” . She called each student one by one to the front and gave them the blue ribbon on their t-shirt. She gave each student 3 extra ribbons, and told them that they had a task to do and had out a ribbon to whom ever they feel who fit best. Then give that person with the ribbon the extra ones that are left over, to hand out to another person, then the other person to another. After this process, they were to report back in a week and explain what happened. So this kid in her class, went over to a junior committee and gave him the ribbon explained to him what it meant, and told him to do the same steps. He said, once you’re done let me know what happened and how this improved your life or society in anyway. Then, the junior executive went to his boss and asked him if it was okay if he placed the blue ribbon on his shirt above his heart. The boss was surprised since he was known as a grouchy boss. He was pleased to receive something so special. As he drove home with the ribbon, he was thinking about who would be the next person honored. When he went into his house he called his son and told him, “ son something incredible happened to day, a junior committee honored me with this blue ribbon and gave me this extra for me to honor someone else with, who I think really deserves this”. Then he continued, “ so as I was on my way home I was thinking about who the next person would be, and I thought about you”. He apologized for yelling at him most of the time when he sees him. Water began to pour out of his son’s eyes. He couldn’t stop, then he spoke up and said, “ dad I was thinking about committing suicide tonight, because I thought I wasn’t important to you, but now that this happened I won’t have to take away my life”. One thing I liked about this story was the assignment the teacher gave out to them I thought it was a good idea. Another thing I found interesting was when the boss gave his son the blue ribbon, since he doesn’t really show so much love to him, he made him feel better and sowed him that he cared. A thing I learned after reading this short story was that, it is important to show love to those who are around you, because you may never know how bad you area really hurting them inside.

*6/26/07 The Great Migration
The Migrants left for the North with great expectations. They found new opportunities in the North, but also faced new problems. White residents in the North also experienced new challenges as they met greater competition for jobs, housing, and political power. Many whites were forced to reexamine their attitudes about race and equality. Harlem was home to new immigrants from many countries. Poles, Germans, Irish, and Italians lived in the neighborhood with African Americans. I thought it was interesting how Harlem was the nicest neighborhood in which African Americans could live.

Title: 1001 facts about the human body
Today I read about different types of birth. In a normal birth the baby is squeezed through the neck of the womb and out of the vagina. Most babies are born head first. About 3% of babies are born bottom first, this is called a breech birth. Under Roman law the fetus had to be taken from the body of a dying mother during pregnancy or labor. The original Cesarean section. Contrary to popular myth , Julius Caesar was not born this way. Cesarean section is 10 times more dangerous than a normal delivery. In most cases a baby is born with the top of the head coming out first and facing toward the back. Around 1 in every 300 babies is born facing toward the front.

Chicken Soup for the teenage soul.
Today I have read a short story called “Last Wish”. This story is about a boy named Chris Hart. He was a 16 year old boy. He was six feet eight inches tall. He weighed 260 pounds. His freshman year he played on the varsity team. Then he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma a form of cancer. His whole life changed. For a while it was in remission. A couple of months before Christmas a doctor told him he didn’t have long to live. That same year a local radio station sponsored a contest granting requests to people who wrote with the best Christmas wishes. A member of the church sent in a letter on Chris’s behalf. His firs wish was to have a stereo system for his truck. His second wish was to see a Dallas Cowboys football game. Chris’s third wish was to go out with a redhead. Christi the girl who wrote this story is a redhead. At first she didn’t want to go out with him. She didn’t even know him. Finally she agreed to go out with him with one of her friends present. Her and Chris started hanging out more often. They liked each other. They went everywhere together. He would always go to her house. One day she heard people in school talking about how she was going out with Chris. She felt embarrassed. She then stopped talking to Chris. She then went to the prom with Chris and they became friends again. After the Prom Chris began to get worse. The doctors gave him a week or less to live. Christy then went to visit him every day. On a Sunday Chris died. I think that this story is very sad. I was very young. I like the fact that she realized that it didn’t matter what people said about her Chris was her friend and he needed her.

Chicken Soup for the teenage soul
Today I have read a story called “Gabby you are sooo skinny”. This story is about a young teenager that weight about 125 pounds. She was a straight-A student. She was involved in school activities and was considered a very together teenager. Her friend had gone into an eating healthy routine and she would get compliments all the time. People would tell her she looked great. Gabby wanted to feel that too. She thought to herself that losing a little weight would help her look better. She began exercising. Eating healthy snacks was a part of her daily routine now. After a couple of weeks she had already lost weight. She began to feel sexy and better about herself. Everyone at school seemed to notice her. They would tell her she looked great, she looked so beautiful and that she looked skinny. That was the greatest feeling Gabby had ever felt. So she kept eating less every day, to the point where she didn’t eat for a whole day. Then it was two days. She kept not eating but to her she was failing because nobody said nice things to her anymore. She felt like a failure. She didn’t want the help even from people that tried helping her. One day her father came in the room and forced her to eat a steak. She didn’t want to it would ruin her. She was crying and she pleaded so her dad would go away. She then told her dad she hated him. Then she realized that she didn’t hate her dad. She hated herself for letting it get that far. She then realized she had a problem. It was a long way to recovery but she did it. I think that this is a very important story because it happens a lot. I think that most girl think that being skinny is beautiful but not everyone thinks that way. They should be healthy according to their body type.

*East Asia
In East Asia, kite flying is an ancient tradition that started about 3,000 years ago. Kites have played an important part in Japanese culture for more than 1,000 years. Shadow puppetry is a traditional art form in Indonesia that dates back hundreds of years. People around the world enjoy games and athletic activities. Sumo wrestling is a popular sport in Tokyo. I think its interesting how some transportation workers have to help cram passengers into a subway car, its just one sign of overcrowding in Tokyo.

*6-28-07 Renaissance and Reformation
The Renaissance began in the 1300s in the wealthy city-states of Italy. The Renaissance began in the 1300s in the independent Italian city-states, which were made up of a city and the surrounding territory it ruled. The Renaissance began in the wealthy and powerful city-states of Italy. The Reformation brought change to the Catholic Church, but also led to conflict among Europe’s Christians and to the rise of the Protestant religions. The Renaissance produced new styles in the arts and new ideas in science. With wealth from trade, the rulers of Italy’s city-states supported painters, sculptors, architects, and other artists.

5/27 Chicken Soup for the teenage soul:
Today I have read a story called “I’ll always be whit You.” This is a story about a 17 year old boy who his girlfriend had just left. His girl said that she was getting engaged to someone else. He went outside to his loving car and shot himself. He left a note and in that note it said: “I wish I could have learned how to hate. Don’t blame yourselves, mom and dad. I love you.” His parents arrived at the house 7 minutes too late. When people hear about this tragedy they would call Mike’s parents to tell them how much their son had helped them. Mike’s friends would go visit the parents and ask if they could do anything for them. The parents would say to never do something like that, to never commit suicide. After all of this happened Mikes parents established a foundation dedicated to preventing suicides. I think that this story is very inspirational. I think that Mike in a way was selfish because he didn’t think about the pain he would cause his parents. I think that no one should do that and if they feel bad about themselves suicide is not a good answer to their problems.

5/28Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul:
In this chapter of the book a read a poem it is called “Somebody Should have Taught Him”. This poem is about a girl who went to a birthday party. Her mom would always tell her not to drink at parties and she remembered so she had a sprite instead. She felt proud of herself, she wasn’t like the other people. As the party finally ended she got into her own car sure to make it home in one piece. Something happened that she never expected. Now she is laying in the pavement. She could her the policeman say “ the kid that caused this wreck was drunk”. Her own blood was all around her and she was trying hard not to cry. She could hear the paramedic say “This girl is going to die”. She was thinking that she was sure the guy had no idea because he choose to drink and drive that she would have to die. She is wondering to herself why people do it knowing that it ruins lives. Now she is feeling the pain cutting her “like a hundred stabbing knives.” She wanted them to engrave “Daddy’s Girl” on her grave. She thinks that someone should have taught him to not drink and drive and maybe she would still be alive. She wanted to let her mom and sister know that she loved him and for her daddy to be brave. She just wished she was able to say I love you and good-bye. I think that this story is really sad. The saddest part is that this happens very constantly. I think that people should think about their lives before they do something like that.

5/29Chicken Soup for the Teenage soul
Today I read a story called “ a long way home”. This story is about a boy who lived in Spain. He was old enough to drive but his parents wouldn’t really let him. One day his father woke him up and asked him to drop him off somewhere and take the car to a repair shop. The boy agreed and in a hurry got dressed. He was so excited he felt like is dad trusted him and that made him really happy. He dropped of his dad and took the car to the repair shop. He knew they were going to take long so he went to watch a movie close buy. By the end of the second movie he realized he was 2 hours late from the time he was supposed to pick up his dad. On his way to the repair shop he was thinking about what he was going to tell his dad. He then thought the best thing to tell him is that the car needed more work done and that is why he was late. He knew if he told his dad the truth he would never let him drive again. So he went to pick up his dad and told him. His dad said he was very disappointed that he had lied to him and he knew the truth because he called the shop. He felt ashamed that his own son couldn’t tell him the truth. He told his son he would walk home. His son said that it was too far to walk home 18 miles. He was right behind his dad in the car all the way home. His dad looked so tired. He realized it was the most successful lesson he had ever gotten. I think that this is a very common problem. Children lie to their parents. I think it is because they are afraid to disappoint them and afraid to get in trouble. What kids don’t realize that you lose you parents trust because you are lying to them.
